In a sensational first round stoppage, Cris Arreola defeated Seth Mitchell this past Saturday. Mitchell’s power and skill were evident, but so were his defensive openings. Arreola used a measured, aggressive approach to break through Mitchell’s defense and work him toward the ropes. As I said in my prediction, his combination punching ability was his most potent weapon. Mitchell was completely baffled by the subtlety of a perfect 1-2. Arreola’s best punch has always been his straight right following his formidable jab, and Mitchell didn’t prepare adequately for that one combination, without which the entire result would likely have been very different. While Mitchell will be forced to reevaluate his goals in the division, Arreola, on the other hand, now has the luxury of doing so.
