Tonight’s fight between Tim Bradley Jr. and Ruslan Provodnikov provides an interesting style matchup, but not much else. Bradley can make any fight ugly and Provodnikov doesn’t exactly guarantee a sensational boxing exhibition himself. Provodnikov will have to tighten his defenses to avoid being picked apart by Bradley’s precision, and at the same time, try to use his pressure fighting skills to deter Bradley from holding and using tactics that could open cuts. In doing so, however, he’ll be more likely to leave himself open to counter shots. Bradley claims he’s adopting a more aggressive style, “throwing less, punching more,” but who knows what that really means? Or if he’s just saying that to manipulate Provodnikov? In the end, I think we can expect to see an interesting, if ugly, fight. Bradley has undeniable talent, but Provodnikov is a unique fighter, and might give fans more than they expect against the man who dethroned Pacquiao.
