In a recent story by Dan Rafael of ESPN Leonard Ellerbe was reported to have announced “Floyd made it very clear that he wants to give the fans the biggest fights that are out there. He wants to stay active…We’re going to do everything in our power to make the biggest fight out there for the fans and we all know what the fight is.” ESPN has played up the announcement and even the article by Rafael feigned some expectation of Mayweather-Pacquiao being scheduled for May 5th. Maybe he is positioning himself to make the fight. If Pacquiao shows some vulnerability against a fighter who should not be able to compete with him based on recent performances, Marquez, it could be a good time for Mayweather to make his move. On the other hand, announcements like this fascinate the fans, and get them excited to pay $70 or more for the pay-per-view and they make Pacquiao look like the one to blame for the fight not being made earlier. I would assume these factors are more significant than any urge to fight Pacquiao and make $60 million+ in a single night. But don’t let me burst your balloon, if you wanna hope, hope. It could happen. I expect Mayweather’s opponent to be chosen not long after Pacquiao-Marquez.
